Williams laying on Valentines Day cards sent in my fans during the chorus
The Only Exception" is a song by the American rock band Paramore. It was released by Fueled by Ramen in February 2010 as the third single from the band's 2009 studio album Brand New Eyes. The song was written by Paramore band members Hayley Williams and Josh Farro; Paramore is also credited as being co-producers to the song. For many, "The Only Exception" was totally diferent to anything the band had ever produced before. The song relies mostly on soft guitar chords and piano, and features lyrics a lot 'lighter' than the bands usual rock fare. The video was directed by Brandon Chesbro, who worked with Paramore previously; however this was his music video debut as he had turned down the chance to direct two other videos from "Brand New Eyes". The video begins with Williams waking up next to an unknown male, who we presume to be her boyfriend/lover. She then writes a note saying "I'm Sorry" and gets up to leave him. The camera pans to follow her walking through to a completely different scene, where, due to the lyrics (when I was younger I saw/my daddy cry/and curse at the wind) we presume the older man she is talking to is her father. The fact that the video is reflecting what is said in the lyrics means it is a lot easier for the audience to understand what the band is trying to portray (in this case, Williams' dissilusion with love, and refusing to "sing of love, if it does not exist.")
